Chinese OnePlus Manufacturer To Store Indian Users’ Data Locally

Chinese smartphone company, OnePlus, has indicated that it will move all the data of its Indian customers to servers located within India.

OnePlus, along with its sister-brands like Vivo and Oppo, is marketed by the Chinese multinational electronics firm, BBK Electronics Corporation.

“We have taken the decision to relocate servers that house data of Indian consumers to India. All data of Indians are on Amazon web servers,” noted founder-CEO (Chief Executive Officer), Pete Lau told ET. This move is expected to address the privacy concerns of the Indian government and OnePlus smartphone users in India.

Privacy activists, in India and globally, have been wary of Chinese smartphone companies, especially in the light of recent happenings in Europe and USA where China was suspected of hacking sensitive data. The fear is further exacerbated from the overreaching influence of state surveillance in China.

“These are issues created out of historical perceptions, rather than what China is now… from the Indian market perspective, consumers know we are a global brand and that’s what they like about us,’ Mr Lau said.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), had asked all banks and financial institutions to store financial data of Indian users, locally. This was undertaken to protect India’s data sovereignty.

It should be noted that the data not stored in servers located within the geographical boundaries of India, do not conform to Indian laws. Thus, no recourse is available for the misuse of Indian data, stored overseas, by foreign governments.

Asus has announced that its upcoming smartphone, the Zenfone Max Pro M2, will have the latest flagship Gorilla Glass 6, and claims that the phone can survive up to 15 consecutive drops (as tested in the lab when dropped from waist-height) on an average. Asus made the announcement on Twitter ahead of the phone’s launch on December 11 in India. “The unrivalled champion of mid-range is ready to begin its dominance with the most durable screen in the segment – Corning Gorilla Glass 6. The Zenfone Max Pro M2 launches on 11th December, exclusively on @Flipkart,” the company said. The Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2 will be a Flipkart exclusive device.

Recently, Asus confirmed that the handset will have a notch on the display, a large battery, an innovative camera and a powerful processor. The company also took a dig at the Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro and the Realme 2 Pro. Although there is no official word on the specifications, previous leaks have hinted at the  hardware the smartphone will carry. A few days ago, the Asus ZenFone Max Pro M2 was leaked in a video on YouTube showing the phone’s design in entirety. In the video, the smartphone is seen with a smaller notch as compared to its competitors, which could mean that it will ditch the 18:9 display in favour of a taller one.

In terms of specs, the Zenfone Max Pro M2 is expected to sport a 6.2-inch display with 2280 x 1080 resolution. On the back, the phone may have a glass panel instead of aluminum, making it vulnerable to breakage. The Zenfone Max Pro M2 looks to retain the dual rear-camera setup and rear fingerprint sensor of the Zenfone Max Pro M1.

A few days ago, tipster Roland Quandt also tweeted out some specs of the ZenFone Max Pro M2. He mentioned that Asus may bring some India-centric features in special variants of the smartphones. According to his tweet, the smartphone could run on Android Oreo instead of Android 9.0 Pie. It could be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 SoC along with a 4GB RAM with options of 64/128GB of storage.
